How Kendall Library Transformed Stormwater Management

The newly constructed three-story Belle Sherman Kendall Library at 609 N. Eldridge serves as more than just a library—it functions as a full-fledged community center, complete with classrooms, after-school programs, and a half-gym. Designed to achieve LEED® Silver Certification, the project integrated sustainable features, including an underground water harvesting system fed by bioswales to support landscape irrigation.
What Convergent Water Technologies Provided
The library’s original bioswale system, intended to filter stormwater runoff and direct it into a 30,000-gallon underground rainwater harvesting system, faced significant issues. Within six months, excessive organic content in the soils clogged the geotextile fabric, drastically reducing flow and causing unacceptable water backup in the parking lot. Rather than undergoing a costly redesign, Construction EcoServices, a Convergent Water Technologies VAR, introduced the FocalPoint High Performance Modular Biofiltration System (HPMBS). This system provided a high-flow biofiltration solution that replaced the ineffective bioswales, achieving superior results in a fraction of the space.

The FocalPoint HPMBS offered an efficient, cost-effective retrofit that resolved Kendall Library’s drainage challenges without requiring a complete rebuild. With only 70 square feet of HPMBS, the library achieved what the original 1,200-square-foot bioswale system failed to deliver, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.
